San Gabriel Country Club was founded in 1904 on land that once belonged to the historic San Gabriel Mission. The original course was only nine holes with sand-oiled greens typical of that time. In 1912 the course was enlarged to 18 holes by noted golfer-architect Norman Macbeth, who later designed other well-known Southern California golf courses. In 1920 the Club engaged the services of golf course architect William “Willie” Watson, whose design changes included the installation of grass greens. Further improvements to the course design were made by renowned golf architects William Park “Billy” Bell in 1930, Robert Trent Jones, Sr. in 1967 and Robert Trent Jones, Jr. in 1997.

The Club holds the distinction of being the oldest 18-hole golf course located on its original site in Southern California and has been the setting for many Southern California amateur golf tournaments. In 1962 the Club hosted a nationally broadcast television challenge match with Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Jack Cupit and Robert Nichols.

The Club also proudly hosts the Cravens Invitational Tournament, which arguably is the nation’s best amateur golf tournament. With its unique modified Scotch format, the Cravens began in 1925 and has been played continuously at San Gabriel since 1943. The member-produced tournament attracts invited teams from all over the country. San Gabriel teams are well represented in the field of competitors vying for the coveted “Silver Bell” award, a prized possession of any San Gabriel member.

The par 71 course with a length of 6,648 yards is primarily noted for its multiple species of oak and sycamore trees, which line narrow fairways and surround small and well-bunkered greens. Adding to the beauty of the course are spectacular views of the San Gabriel Mountains. The course's compact and level terrain lends well to walkers of every age but challenges golfers of all abitlities. In addition, the Club offers a caddy corps to enhance the golfing experience for all skill levels of members.

The Club offers numerous in-house and guest tournaments throughout the year for men, women, couples and junior golfers. Tee times are easily obtainable with online access through our member website. Golf merchandise may be purchased at the Club’s golf shop and lessons from our golf pros are easily arranged. The Club has a practice range and provides all members with a locker and golf club storage capabilities. Through the website, email blasts and our monthly newsletter members can access a Club calendar, which highlights current and future activities including golf, special events and dining.

The dining experience at the Club is on par with the best restaurants in town, through the offerings of our gourmet Chef and his staff. The Club is particularly proud of its family-oriented events, which offer extraordinary culinary selections, and often include entertainment and special attractions.
